WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE FASHION?
You all have seen people talking about sustainable fashion
everywhere on internet, but what it is actually?
Sustainable Fashion term comprises of two words: sustainable and fashion.π
Sustainable is a word which can be defined as
something which stays for long and focuses on maintaining an
ecological balance along with taking care of natural resources. For e.g.
using a chemical base makeup product which contains ingredients which will harm
the environment in any manner can’t be counted as sustainable but in other hand
something which doesn’t harm the same can be counted as sustainable. To be
clear very rare things are completely sustainable but why can’t we try our best
to make the most out of it and find the options which are more sustainable than
others.
Fashion is a term we are all familiar with. It is a popular
aesthetic expression of a particular time and place. There are a lot of things
which comes under fashion. Out of all of them, here in my blog we will
especially talk about clothing, footwear and accessories.
Now the question is what comes under sustainable fashion?π
When we talk about sustainable fashion there are various
terms we talk about-
·
Natural - Derived from nature, like natural dyes,
yarns and fabric.
·
Slow fashion – A global movement which talks about
slowing down production and consumption of apparel and goods.
·
Recycle- Transforming something into other by changing
its original state using various processes. For e.g. recycling single use plastic
bottles into t-shirt.
·
Reduce - Reducing the consumption.
·
Multipurpose – Using something in multiple ways possible.
For e.g. using scarf as hairband and neck accessory.
·
Upcycle/ Repurpose - Transforming by-products, waste
materials or unwanted products into new value-added materials not by changing
its original state. E.g. using empty food cans as pencil stand.
·
Second hand – something already being used by one
person and transferred to another person.
·
Thrifted – The items which are second hand, vintage,
or are said second hand by brands because of minor defects are sold in a
different segment. They are cheaper and, in a way, they are being saved from
getting dumped, those are thrifted items.
·
Bio degradable – Something which assimilates in the
soils easily, Like kitchen waste.
·
Repeat – Wearing or using the already existing pieces
multiple times.
·
Green – Used for something which doesn’t harm the
nature.
·
Conscious consumerism – Shopping what you actually
need.
·
Less or no carbon footprint - Amount
of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere as a result of the activities of
a particular individual or community.
·
Zero waste – A lifestyle where we try our best to
reduce the amount of waste we generate, as going completely zero in terms of
waste is near to impossible.
·
Minimalism – it’s a lifestyle in which buy and keep
the things in our life which we actually really need.
·
Capsule wardrobe – A minimal wardrobe which consist of
90% clothes which you would wear any day and which are really important pieces
to you.
These are the
one-line explanation for all these practices. There is a lot to explain about
all of these terms.
If you are doing any of these, you have already taken your step towards itπ. I will talk about more about them in my next blog.
